See Ya Later 2014! New Year's Nail Art with MAC, O.P.I and Ciaté

Hey guys, I hope you all had a happy Christmas, Hannukah or just enjoyed a bit of time off but now we've come to the end of 2014.  It's been a good year, not much happened really but I started my PhD so that's kind of big.  For the blog, I hope 2015 will bring more diversity to it and more regular posts.  I really want to talk more about film on here so expect a review or two in the next few weeks but don't worry, I'll do some nail art to tie it all together :)  Now, onto my New Year's nail art!  I've used some polishes I got for Christmas (I didn't get many!) for this, MAC Tropical and Ciaté Sass Pot, as well as my favourite OPI gold polish, Goldeneye.

MAC Tropical, OPI Goldeneye, Ciaté Sass Pot, Essie Buy Me a Cameo and Barry M Black

Instead of writing 2015, I went for the Roman numerals MMXV 'cos I'm classy like that LOL (or straight lines are easier to do).  I put together a .gif so you can see the colour shift a bit better but these two glitters are STUNNING together!

Well I hope you've all liked this post and here's to a Happy new Year!  Let me know in the comments below how you feel about me talking about film more on the blog, will you read the posts?  Be sure to like, subscribe and follow me by the sites below, until next time :D

Frozen Inspired Nail Art with Nail Geek Dreams*, Clear Skies* and Live Fearless*

Now, I could hardly let Christmas go past without posting some Frozen inspired nails and since I had a few blue shades from Makeup Revolution's Nail Geek 'Cool'* range to review, it couldn't be more perfect.  The look is inspired by the Nordic detailing found in the interior of Arendelle Castle as well as the costumes worn by both Elsa and Anna but of course the colour scheme lends itself more to Elsa's character.  I popped a bit of holographic top coat on the base shade, Dreams, to give it a bit of frostiness but it is a creme polish jsyk but here's the nail art!

Nail Geek Dreams* (Baby Blue), Clear Skies* (Periwinkle Blue) and Live Fearless* (Denim Blue)

The polishes were very much like the previous Nail Geek shades I've reviewed, a bit thick but good quality for the cheap price point.

So it's nearly Christmas, are you all sorted yet?  I hope you like the nail art and be sure to follow, subscribe and like the sites below, until next time :)

Makeup Revolution Nail Geek Sophisticats Collection*

Hey guys, today I'm bringing you swatches from Makeup Revolution Nail Geek The Sophisticats collection swatches and reviews.  I chose this collection for review because I thought the shades were a little different than your regular Safe for Work polishes so let's pop on under the cut for some photos and my thoughts on the polishes.

Mistletoe Nail Art with Barry M Chai

This is one of those ideas that just wouldn't leave my head until I did it!  I based the design around a White Stuff jumper and just thought the overall look was quite cute, I also really wanted to use Barry M Chai FINALLY

Barry M Chai, Coconut, Passionfruit, Raspberry Key Lime and O.P.I Greenwich Village

So I used the dry brush technique to add a bit of dimension to the background and used my detailing brush for all the mistletoe and bow detailing, then a dotter for the berries.  I love the effect of the shadows in this nail art so I'm glad I spent the extra time to do that detail.

So I'm keeping this post short and sweet!  I hope you like this post and aren't getting sick of festive manicures yet because there are plenty more to come LOL!  Make sure you follow, subscribe and like the sites below, until next time :-)

Makeup Revolution Nail Geek in Peppermint* and Inbetween*

So the budget makeup brand everyone's been talking about lately is Makeup Revolution.  Launched earlier this year, they've taken the world by storm and they recently launched their new Nail Geek range, 45 nail colours to suit any mood at the very low price of £1.49.  I was contacted by Makeup Revolution to review some of these polishes, I've 10 to show you so here are the first two in the form of some seasonal nail art!

Peppermint* is obviously the mint green base colour on the nail.  I've two coats of it on the nails above, sealed in with top coat and I did this kind of brushstroke art around the edges using Inbetween*, a nice teal shade, and my go-to white polish.

The polishes are quite thick so you have to be careful with application because it you put on thicker coats, they might not level out without a good top coat.  The polish has good pigmentation and I really like the colour.  The brush is your standard width (although it's described as wide on the website, it's not OPI or Essie wide) and you can cover your nail in three strokes.  For £1.49, you get 12ml which is more than Barry M and a few ml short of OPI.  You get a lot for your money with Nail Geek polishes so I'd recommend checking out the collections to get the most out of your order and Peppermint and Inbetween are from the Cool Nails collection and I'll be showcasing the other shades soon, as well as another collection!

So look out for my other Nail Geek posts in the coming weeks!  Nail Geek polishes are £1.45 and you can buy them from Makeup Revolution's website and I think you can get them at concession stands as well but don't quote me on that LOL

Be sure to like, subscribe and follow me on the sites below, I just hit 3,000 followers on tumblr so a big THANK YOU for those who follow me there and sure if you're not already, help me reach the next milestone :p

Alexa Chung for Nails Inc - Alexa Lace

I'm one of those many people who just look at Alexa Chung and think 'how are you so cool?'.  From her days on Popworld to now, I've loved her style and dry wit so of course when she was announced as the new face of Nails Inc AND was collaborating on some cool new effect top coats and polishes, I had to get in on that action!  Luckily, I was a runner up in the Yoomoo Nail Art competition and one of the prizes was a voucher for a Nails Inc Express mani and since I like to do my own nails, I used the voucher to buy the Alexa Lace polish, as well as the beautiful sheer pink polish I layered it on top of, now, onto pictures!

Since the glitter pieces aren't metallic, they're slightly pearlescent red so it is very wearable and with the different shaped pieces, you'll never have the same look twice.  I've layered two coats of Alexa Lace on top of each other to show you the density of the polish.  You will need to move the pieces about a bit to get even coverage but that's the case with most glitter top coats.

It's called Alexa Lace for a reason and I think when layered with a nude shade like it is here, it's very delicate and perfect for a lady but I think on top of a black or darker colour, it would look fabulous as well.  I'd have loved some flower shaped pieces as well to complete the lace look but, maybe next time!

Will you be picking up any of the Alexa Chung for Nails Inc polishes?  Alexa Lace is £15 and can be picked up on their website and in Nails Inc salons nationwide.

Quiz Clothing #QuizDressNails Competition feat. Models Own

I love a good nail art competition, don't you?  Have you guys seen Quiz's nail art competition?  For all those nail artists based in the UK (sorry rest of the world!), you can enter by choosing a dress from Quiz's website and use it as inspiration for some nail art, go HERE for all the rest of the details.

Here's my entry.  It's based on this cute black and white skater dress with a cool sketched floral pattern.  I used Models Own White Light as my base and Barry M Black for the pattern.  I used my usual detailing brush for all of the pattern.  I made use of using the brush when it was dry to try and create a bit more depth and texture and I like the effect.  I think it gets across the hand drawn nature of the print, insomuch as I can with a brush and nail polish :-)

The closing date for the competition is Sunday 30th November so get your skates on and get an entry in.  First prize is a £100 voucher for Quiz, followed by £50 for 2nd place and £25 for 3rd, with all placed winners getting a £25 BeautyUK goodie bag.  You may as well try it out I say and you never know, you might win yourself a voucher for you or even for someone as an Xmas pressie!

I hope you've liked this post and let me know if you're thinking of entering (all the details are here), until next time :-)

Lykke Li/Plaid Nail Art with Flossgloss Faded

So if you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you would know that I went down to Dublin on Sunday to see the one and only Lykke Li.  THIS WOMAN THOUGH.  I've seen her live before and so I knew the show would not disappoint.  Of course, I knew I had to do some sort of themed nail art and I wasn't too sure how to make my whole mani Lykke Li themed so I went for an accent nail featuring her current insignia/logo with the rest of my nails being a monochrome plaid design based on my beaut coat from Topshop.  I used one of my fave polishes ever, Flossgloss Faded for the base to get that grungy, slightly green/grey base.

Flossgloss Faded, Barry M Coconut and Black

I picked up a tour t-shirt that is something you can really wear day-to-day (it's so soft!) as well as a tour poster.  I really hope that Lykke Li doesn't stop after this album/tour, she's one of my favourite acts and I'd love to have the opportunity to see her live again.  It's only been 24 hours since I heard her sing the most amazing cover of Drake's 'Just Hold On We're Going Home' and I'm ready to book a ticket to see her play in Stockholm in December.

Enough fangirling!  I hope you've enjoyed this post and aren't getting too bored of plaid nails, it's autumn after all!  Be sure to follow me by all the sites below, until next time :D

MAC Holiday Collection 2014 - Keepsakes/Red Lip Bag

I think it's fair to say that MAC never fails to produce brilliant Holiday sets and this year is no better.  Apart from the Heirloom collection, which is their limited edition collection, they've also put together these keepsakes, gorgeous palettes and sets in limited edition packaging that are the perfect gift for any beauty lover.  I still had some birthday money left and so I treated myself to the Red Lip Bag Keepsake which contains a Ruby Woo lipstick, lipglass and lip pencil.  I've always wanted to try Ruby Woo and since this is my first EVER MAC lipstick, I knew it was right to go for an classic.

CND Vinylux Modern Folklore Collection - Indigo Frock*

You saw this polish in this post before but I thought it deserved an entire post to itself.  Indigo Frock looks like a blue toned charcoal grey in the bottle but in daylight on the nail, you can see that it is indeed a very intense indigo shade.

Indigo Frock has a creme finish and the above swatch is two coats of polish with a top coat on top.  It's one of those work friendly shades that will get you through autumn/winter and would suit every skin tone, in my opinion.

Of course, I couldn't not do some nail art on top of the polish so I used Barry M Silver to create the marble effect I've shown you guys here and using a nail art brush and dotter, I created this lace effect on the nail, which I've done here also and was originally inspired by The Illustrated Nail.

The Modern Folklore collection are available to buy from SweetSquared for professional customers in the UK and Ireland and are available as a salon service and for individual purchase in select salons nationwide.  Find your nearest salon here.

I hope you guys enjoyed this post and be sure to follow, subscribe, like and all that jazz the sites below and let me know what you guys think of my new photo set up.  I'm trying out using artificial light since daylight is so unpredictable at this time of year that my photos might suffer but if you guys prefer daylight then let me know and I'll try to make that work as often as I can, until next time :-)

Easy Plaid with Kiko Exclusive Blue

It's my first tartan/plaid of the season and I was inspired by this American Apparel skirt to create a simple plaid design.  I switched out the grey/olive colour of the skirt for this striking Kiko shade in Exclusive Blue (which I reviewed here) for something a little bit more eyecatching but seasonally appropriate.

I used Barry M's Mustard and Models Own's Fizzy Cola for the plaid details as they are lovely warm autumnal shades and cobalt blue and mustard just go so well together.

Are you loving the cobalt blue shade this autumn/winter?  Let me know in the comments below and be sure to be following, liking and subscribing to the sites below, until next time :)

Bride of Frankenstein Nail Art with Rimmel Little Bo Peep

It's that time of year when the most innocent of characters and inanimate objects suddenly become sexy with a bit of spandex and a decorative nose (I'm looking at you Sexy Olaf Costume!), it's HALLOWEEN!  I haven't been enthusiastic about Halloween in a good few years but I'm never one to miss out on a good themed nail opportunity.

For my first Halloween nail art inspiration, I looked back to the classics and became inspired by the Bride of Frankenstein.  Now I know that Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein nail art can be a little bit cliché at this point, I hope I've created something a little bit more original since I'm drawing inspiration from the film itself, so my nail art is monochrome and suitably sinister!

Green Marble Nail Art with Models Own Diamond Luxe Emerald Green

When I saw the first press shots of the Models Own Diamond Luxe collection, my eye immediately went towards the gorgeous Emerald Green, which I'd say is closer to a Kelly green but we must keep with the gemstone theme shouldn't we?  I think I probably have more green shades in my nail polish collection than any other colour so I am always drawn to them like some sort of magpie LOL!

Anyway, I finally got myself to my nearest Superdrug that stocks Models Own and bought Emerald Green (as well as Fizzy Cola Bottles from the Sweet Shop collection since it's currently buy one, get one half price) and couldn't wait to get it on my fingertips.  The colour was so vibrant in the bottle so I really hoped it would transfer onto my nails well.

Models Own Emerald Green (Diamond Luxe), 25 Carat Gold and Nail Art Pen in Black

I'm really pleased with this polish.  It's a standard Models Own formula, a little on the thicker side but this one in particular could be a one coater but I did two just to be on the safe side.  It's so pigmented so don't expect a semi-sheer shimmer polish if you're picking this up.  The gold shimmer in the polish is quite subtle but it does catch the light and create a bit of dazzle but it's not in your face which is good for people like me who prefers their subtle shimmers since they're better for nail art.  The polish dried quickly enough but I added a fast dry top coat to speed up the process and to add extra shine.

To match the luxury of Emerald Green (which actually contains real diamond dust!), I wanted to try and replicate ThisIsVenice's marble design she has been posting lately.  She usually uses white with black and gold but I was hoping that by using Emerald Green, it would almost come out like jade stone or green marble.  I used cling film to apply the 25 Carat Gold on top of Emerald Green then used the nail art brush to add thin black lines on top and thinned these out with acetone to give the impression of veined marble.  If you'd like a more detailed or visual tutorial for this, let me know!  I'm really pleased with the overall look and I think it just elevates Emerald Green to be a touch more luxe.  When the gold shade is called 25 Carat Gold, how can it not be luxe, eh?

Have you picked up any Diamond Luxe polishes yet?  Do you have your eye on any?  I know I'm loving the look of the Disco Pants collection from Models Own and guess which shade I want?  Yep, the green one LOL!  I can't wait to see that in person as well, until next time!  Also, be sure to be liking, subscribing, following and sharing the sites below :D

So the other day my Mummy came home with a little present for me in the shape of Ciaté's Speed Dry top coat from TK Maxx (I'll be doing a whole entire post about my bargain beauty buying in a week or two so you can learn my secrets LOL) and of course I wanted to see how it measured up to my usual Seche Vite or Instadri so I though I'd try it out with some nail art made with other Ciaté polishes I have.  I don't have many (which is a shame) but the two shades I do have complement each other really well so it worked out great.  Pop on under the cut to see more photos and read about how I found this top coat :-)

#NailBreastCancer - Breast Cancer Awareness Month

So I'm sure many of you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and there are various campaigns going on to help raise money for various charities.  One that has caught my eye is the #NailBreastCancer campaign which is associated with the charity Future Dreams, which splits its money between Breakthrough Breast Cancer and The Haven.  They've teamed up with many nail polish brands, suppliers and publications to help try and promote fundraising in salons which is great.

Models Own Cerise Shine and Pink Veneer

Regular people like myself are encouraged to post a #maniselfie on Instagram and other social media and use the hashtag #NailBreastCancer to help raise awareness.  You can text NAIL10 followed by £1, £2, £3, £5 or whichever amount you'd like to donate to 70070.  If you'd prefer, you can donate £3 to Cancer Research UK by texting BEAT to 70200 but it's so easy to donate through text so there really is no excuse so just choose whichever charity you feel is best for you.

What's Your Sign? Zodiac Nail Art

So this week saw me turning one year older and I thought I'd mark the occasion with some zodiac nails, showing off my star sign, Libra.  Now I'm definitely not one for reading star charts and depending on my daily horoscope to guide my life but I can see traits of the classic 'libra' in myself but then I'm sure that would be the case for any star sign LOL

Barry M Navy & Silver Foil

So this manicure is rather simple, I just replicated the astrological sign of Libra onto my nails with a smallish brush (it's the one I do most of my detail work with, it's just a cut down eyeliner brush) and then applied these star gems to complete to cosmic look.  If I was looking to put more effort in and not scraping the barrel for ideas, I would probably have done a galaxy nail base but sure, that thought came to me after I'd done the silver foil so *shrug*.

I'd been keen to use this navy from Barry M since it's one of the original polishes that started off my collection and I don't think I've used it on the blog before but it's such a stunning colour, especially for autumn and winter.

This nail art is easily customisable for your own star sign, why not add in the constellation pattern for your zodiac sign as well!  Be sure to follow me on the sites below so you don't miss anything Flails and Nails and be sure to vote for my nails over on the Yoomoo website, link is over on the sidebar, until next time!

My inspiration comes from the Tropicoolmoo, which is plain frozen yoghurt with mango and passionfruit pureé and mango pieces.  I am OBSESSED with anything passionfruit so this flavour is right up my street.

CND Vinylux Modern Folklore Swatches & Nail Art (Part 1)

CND are one of those brands that I've always wanted to try but just never got around to...until now!  I've been lucky enough to get three colours from new Modern Folklore collection to try out and create some nail art for you guys.  The Modern Folklore collection incorporates what you would expect in an Autumn/Winter collection, the darker reds, purples, greys, oranges but they're metallic so it adds a little bit more luxury to the overall effect of the polish, perfect for making a bit more of an impact with a standard colour choice.  The collection itself is inspired by Fabergé eggs and embellished handmade craftmanship so they've hit the nail on the head (pardon the pun on that) with their colour selection.

The first colour I'll be showing off is Crimson Sash* and I've also used Indigo Frock* for the nail art some pop on under the cut to see more pictures and read what I think of the polishes :-)

Cable Knit Nail Art with Barry M Mustard

I'm extremely pale with pink undertones to my skin tone, this means I can't wear mustard or I'll look like a corpse, much to my chagrin as yellow was my favourite colour growing up (I was always the Yellow Power Ranger, never pink) so when I saw that Barry M were releasing a mustard shade as part of their Gelly range, I got very excited because this is the only way I'll ever be able to wear mustard, especially in cable knit form.

I obviously used Barry M Mustard as my base for the nail art, mixing it with Mocha from the Matte range to create the tawny brown of the pattern, added a little white for the highlights and then used Mocha itself for the shadows.  I used two different nail art brushes for this look and if you guy would like a tutorial for this, let me know :-)  This would be great in a variety of colours which I'll probably try out soon in the future.

Abstract Autumnal Nail Art

So let's get cracking into some proper autumn nail art!  It's a bit of a funny one here since we are nearly in the middle of September and it's 21 degrees outside (that's in Celsius for the American folks) so although it's definitely not looking like Autumn during the day, it is getting a bit more chilly at night so these nails are somewhat appropriate.  I made use of a few of my Autumnal Nail Essentials and had some cool inspiration for these nails so hop on behind the cut for more deets!

O.P.I My Dogsled is a Hybrid - Swatches and Review

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you would know how excited I have been for the latest O.P.I collection to drop in my local Sallys.  I make no effort to hide my love for all things Scandinavian and Nordic and so of course, the O.P.I Nordic Collection will of course attract my attention.  Since I'm not made of money, I only picked up two shades from the collection so I had to make my selection carefully and I was immediately drawn to this gorgeous sea green shade that is apparently inspired by the Northern Lights in Finland and the waters of the Norwegian Fjords so here's my swatches.

This colour is unlike anything I have.  I would describe it as a dusky green turquoise which makes it appropriate for being a part of an Autumn/Winter collection so it's a bit unusual and it's definitely something a little different than you're usual Autumn/Winter palette.

The above swatches are three coats with a top coat.  I found it to be a little streaky on some nails after two coats so I used a third and that evened all of the colour out.

My Dogsled is a Hybrid, and other O.P.I shades are £11.95 from OPI and Sallys Beauty Supplies

What do you think of this shade?  Let me know in the comments below and I'll have another colour from the Nordic collection up on the blog soon, as well as some other Autumn/Winter releases I just couldn't resist!  Be sure to follow me by all the sites below, I've been hovering around a few milestone figures for a while now on a few sites and I'd like an extra like, follow or subscription if you could.

Inspired by...Game of Thrones (Queen Margaery Nail Art)

For followers of my blog, it's no secret that I love Game of Thrones.  I've watched every episode, I'm trying to read the books (it's really disheartening when you've been reading for hours and you've only moved up 3%!) and if you squint hard enough during the weddings, trials and coronations in Kings Landing, you might just see a blur that kind of looks like me.  Game of Thrones has been one of the biggest inspirations behind my nail art and when I first started my Game of Thrones nails, my skills weren't the best and I'd like to think I've improved so here I am, adding even more to my Game of Thrones corner of the blog by showing you some nails inspired by Margaery's dress from her wedding to Joffrey.
