2013 Round Up

2013 has been a pretty big year for me.  I started this blog and expanded Flails and Nails across over social media, as well as completing and graduating from my Masters course.  2014 will hopefully be even better, with more blogging and hopefully the start of my PhD research (if I make up my mind about what I want to study!) but here are the top five posts on Flails and Nails decided by you guys.

(Click on the pictures to go to the post)

#1 GoT: House Lannister

#2 GoT: House Baratheon

#3 Pastel Stripey Floral Nails

#4 Inspired by True Blood (Sookie Stackhouse)

#5 Get the Look: Turquoise Nails

Since this blog was started so that I could talk more in depth about the film and television shows that continue to inspire my nail art, I'm really glad about the popularity of the fandom related nails and of course, I'm happy that florals are loved as well because I'm not too sure what I will do for you guys come Spring because it will all be about the floral patterns!

Do you agree with the most popular posts on Flails and Nails as viewed by the audience or has your favourite been neglected?  Let me know in the comments below and be sure to follow me to be kept up to date with all the happenings on Flails and Nails :-)  Until next time and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

#NYE

Hi there!  I hope you all had a great Christmas and got everything you wished for.  Sorry for the lack of posts this past week but the Yuletide season, combined with being sick and working the past weekend meant that the blog was a little neglected but hopefully that will all change come the New Year!

To all those party animals who will be out all hours on the 31st/1st, I hope these nails will provide a little inspiration for a manicure that will complete your party look.

High glamour is always on the agenda for any New Year's Eve ensemble (unless like me you are more likely to be in your jim jams eating prawn toast but whatevs) so metallics and shimmers are a must.  It took all of my power NOT to use Goldeneye so I thought I'd go for a similar polish but in silver.

I used Smoke 'n' Mirrors as a base for Her Royal Shine-ness so that the silver is as saturated as possible, applied the polka dots (I tried to do a graduated effect on my middle and little finger but it didn't really work out) and then a coat of silver glitter to give a faux-textured effect.  These nails really catch the light and look as though you have fashioned some press-on nails with aluminium foil.  The top coat of glitter gives a nod to the top nail trend of 2013, texture, without being actually textured.

This is a no-fuss, high impact look that will go with any number of colour combos and outfit choices.

What are you doing to bring in the New Year?  Let me know here, or by any of my other sites.  Until next time :-)

Lebkuchen Nails

Frohe Weihnachten!  Or Merry Christmas!  These nails are a little bit whimsical and inspired by those little German gingerbread biscuits you see this time of year.

Jacava Gift Box - Shaftsbury Avenue

So a week and a bit ago, I was lucky enough to win Jacava's latest giveaway on Facebook which was for the 'Shaftsbury Avenue' gift box which had four different polishes and their top coat.  I just thought I'd let you guys see the gift box since I thought you might be interested in this sort of thing.  Obviously, it makes a great gift and although it might be a little late for Christmas (you could chance it!), it'll make a great birthday present for a nail polish enthusiast.

The polishes came in this great magnetic gift box and you had to search REALLY hard through the paper to find the polishes.  The gift box was also packed into a cardboard box with loads of bubble wrap so you can be assured that your polishes will arrive in one piece.
The polishes in this particular box set are (L-R) Toffee Apple, Crimson Crush, Blueberry Muffin and Purple Passion

Graduation

It's finally time to change all of my biographies since I'm officially a graduate for the second time!  Not much to show you guys but I thought you might be interested in my nails for the day.

Color Club Evolution, Barry M Crush (Matte) and Barry M Blue (Retro)

So as I might have mentioned before on the blog (or never shut up about), I've been doing a Masters degree for the past year (September 2012-September 2013) and I graduated this week.  I've never been to a Winter graduation before so it was a bit strange for it to be so cold but unbelievably, it was brighter than my previous graduation and at least it didn't rain (we got some good photos).

You can see in my last graduation photo that I have strawberries on my nails because it was a theme for my accessories (hair clip and wedges) but since I was graduating from my post-grad degree, I thought I'd be a little bit more grown up (as grown up as nail art can be LOL) and went for this simple chevron design.  It references the hood I wore which represents my degree (M.A).  The colours all match up but the proportion of the colours have been changed as I wanted the light blue to be my base rather than the burgundy.  I used the nail polish brush for the burgundy tips and a striper brush for the metallic blue accents.  I added the black gems to draw in a bit of black from my gown.

Apologies for the poor photos of late guys, the light has been so dim when I have a chance to take photos (or remember to) so I seem to end up with some lacklustre photos as I can't slow down the shutter speed too much because I don't have a tripod and so my pictures get blurry so I'm sorry but hopefully, in the words of D.Ream, things can only get better.

Wooly Winter Warmers

So this will be as cheesy as my nails get this festive season, I promise!  Trying to emulate the styles of The Illustrated Nail and Nancy Mc, I wanted to recreate some of favourite Christmas jumper designs on my nails.  Follow me under the cut to see the original inspirations and how successful I was in my endeavour :-)

Christmas Baubles

So this is the first in my more 'glamourous' manicures for Christmas, I guess.  There are 50 gems across my two hands and while it may look complicated, it is quite simple to do, just rather time consuming.

Ding Dong Merrily On High

And so we begin the festive themed posts!  I will hopefully be splitting my festive nail art between traditional, if not cheesy, themed nail art and more glamourous, holiday party looks.  I will also be posting my top picks for Winter polishes, as well as a Bargain Hunter's Guide to Nail Polish Shopping and hopefully this will become a regular feature, almost like a newsletter compiling all the best deals to be had in the world of nail polish (and beauty in general)

So let's get on with the show!

Au Revior to Autumn, Farewell to Fall

We are on the cusp of the changing season, or rather, it's cold and about to get even colder!  So, in the spirit of the changing season, I thought I would do some nail art that can only be described as 'autumntastic' in it's colour scheme (don't worry, I'm not going to try and make 'autumntastic' happen LOL).  This will also be the debut of some American Apparel nail polish on my blog so follow me under the cut for a brief review and possibly more pics of these nails :-)

MS MR (+ Dublin Haul)

So for those who don't follow my twitter or instagram, I was in Dublin this weekend to see one of my favourite new bands, MS MR.  Since I didn't get to do any special nails for Queens of the Stone Age (who I saw last week), I knew I had to do something for this gig.  Follow me under the cut to read about how I did these nails, what they are inspired by and my haul from Dublin.

CELEBRATE

I rustled these nails together to celebrate my results from university.  I passed my Masters with Distinction!  This means that I'm in a really good position to apply for my Ph.D and funding so finally the wait is over and I can concentrate on not falling up or down the stairs when I graduate LOL.  I'm not ready to change my short bio JUST YET but once graduation comes around, MA Student I will no longer be :(

O.P.I Goldeneye, Barry M Lilac & Mint Green, Models Own Lemon Meringue & Blueberry Muffin and Nails Inc New Compton Street

These are my 'confetti' nails and I think these would be really nice for a Christmas do or some sort of night out.  Goldeneye is just the most AMAZING gold shimmer.  I have two coats on my nails.  It applies smooth and evenly for a great luxe look.  I chose pastel shades for my confetti because I love pastels and these are my celebration nails dagnabbit!  I used a striper brush to apply all the different colours.  It's a pretty simple idea with a big impact.  Change the colours for something more specific like holidays, St. Patrick's Day etc...

What would you put on your nails in celebration?  Let me know in the comments below or through any other site I'm on.  Subscribe or follow to be kept up-to-date on all Flails and Nails goings ons!

Also, keep an eye open because I might just be taking on another social media site (the only one I'm NOT on LOL) so look forward to that, until next time :-)

Gothic Argyle

So this marks the start of what you could call the 'festive' manicures as I'll be doing a mix of cheesy, festive fun nails with some more sparkly, glamorous nails that tap into the latest fashion trends and can be worn during Christmas or Holiday parties.

We're kicking off with these dark and mysterious argyle nails that match with the current 90s grunge/punk trends of AW13/14 in the ever popular winter-y shades of red and berry!

Halloween 2013 - Sugar Skulls

Today I bring you my last Halloween design and it is one of my favourites, the sugar skull nail.  I did them last year and knew they were going to be a staple Halloween nail for years to come.  Follow me under the cut to read about how I created these nails and a few more Halloween nail ideas.

Pink Friday

No, this isn't to do with the Nicki Minaj album of the same name but rather for Pinktober, the month dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness.  Many different beauty and lifestyle bloggers have been doing their part to raise awareness about this awful disease and here are some nails that will hopefully help as well.

Inglot 702, 331, O.P.I A-Rose From the Dead and Barry M Nail Art Pens in Pink and White

So these nails are just a mix and match of different line work in various shades of pink.  The base colour, Inglot 702 is a perfect pastel pink that is bang on trend for this Autumn/Winter 2013/14.  I used a striper brush for all of the designs except my ring finger, for which I used the Barry M Nail Art Pens.

So ladies, get yourself informed and check yourself out regularly so you know if something is different sooner rather than later.

Halloween 2013 - Blood Stained Nails

It's that time of year when the queues outside every single costume shop in the land are around the corner and everyone's asking 'What are you dressing up as?'.  I used to be a much more enthusiastic person when it came to Halloween but these past few years, I haven't really put in the effort to put together a killer costume, only raiding my wardrobe to put together a vaguely believable costume for 1950's housewife or Jitterbug dancer (I like vintage style clothes, can you tell?).  So I thought, let's make an effort with my nails AT LEAST.  My nails last year were some AMAZING sugar skull nails which I shall recreate for you guys but here is my first look, blood stained nails!  Jump under the cut for more pictures and how I can quite clearly not do gradients.

22 ooh ooh ooh ooh

Models Own Blueberry Muffin, Maybelline Surreal, L'Oreal Banana Pop, Barry M Peach Melba, Barry M Lilac and Sinful Colors Snow Me White

So for my birthday nails, I had to use one of my favourite polishes, Blueberry Muffin.  I just wanted to do something cute and simple so I went for this bunting design and a rather deformed 22 on my ring finger.  It's been a while since I've worn something so cute and pastel on my nails so I love this design, although the 22 could be better.

What would your ideal birthday nails be, let me know in the comments below or through any of my other sites :-)  Until next time :D

You can vote for these nails over on Grazia Daily as part of Manicure Monday, every vote counts!
